Richard Montanez Early Life
Richard Montanez was born on 15 August 1958 in Mexico. He grew up with his ten siblings in Guasti, a little town near Ontario, California. Richard and his siblings lived in a single-bedroom apartment while growing up; as a native Spanish speaker, and he had difficulties writing and reading English. Because of this, he couldn’t complete his diploma and sought low-paying jobs.
In 1976, a friend informed him about a janitor opening at the Frito-Lay plant in California. He got the job as a janitor; however, he would monitor how the machine operated, knowing more about the company and its products while working. However, one of the days, the machine broke down, and a bunch of Cheetos ended up covered in their cheese powder.
With no solution at the moment, he took the bare Cheetos home and perked them, adding chili powder. It is similar to what he used to see on Mexican streets. After sharing his new invention with the company’s president Roger Enrico, the president was impressed, which gave birth to the flaming hot series of products, including “Flamin” Hot Cheetos.
As of 2022, Richard Montanez’s net worth is estimated at $16 million.
