AJ Styles grew up in Jacksonville, North Carolina’s Base Camp Lejeune. His father was a member of the United States Marine. Severe financial problems ensued when his father left the marines and was addicted to overdrinking.
Later, he and his family moved to Gainesville, North Carolina. AJ Styles spent most of his youth in extreme poverty in a trailer park.

Styles made his professional wrestling debut in 1998 and wrestled for many independent organizations until signing with World Championship Wrestling in 2001. From 2002 until 2013, he was known as “Mr. TNA” with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. Styles took part in the TNA three times in the heavyweight NWA World Championship and two times in the heavyweight TNA World Championship. He was the first championship title holder for the X Division, which Styles conquered six times. To date, Styles is the only wrestler to have won the TNA Triple Crown 5 times.
He was the first TNA wrestler to be named #1 on the Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) 500 list. He also competed in the 2002-2006 Ring of Honor, the first pure ROH Champion. Styles joined New Japan Pro-Wrestling in 2014 and obtained his first one of two IWGP Heavyweight Championships during his debut fight.
